OMT U14 Boys’ Hockey

U14 Boys’ Hockey

U14s Boys’ Hockey Teams

Welcome to all current and future OMT U14 players! Whether your son is an experienced player or completely new to the sport we’d love to have him join our inclusive and ambitious club.

Our coaching development plan has a focus on fun, technical skill development and tactical understanding. Our coaches, in this age group, begin to lay the foundations of understanding of the game.

Sport, in a supportive environment, helps children build confidence. It teaches children discipline, social skills and work ethic. Most of all, our members learn the value of their teammates.

Two Teams, One Ambition…

Team selection is a fluid process; teams are selected on rates of development, commitment and technical, tactical and physical skills. Both teams train together and comradery is built throughout the section. Sportsmanship is a core club value and is required from the boys.

Fun and creativity coupled with intensity and competitiveness are the key principles for our Performance and Development sides.

Performance Team – The performance team will be entered into both the England Hockey Cup Competition and the Mercian League, where they will get to pit their wits against some of the best sides in the country.

Development Team – Entered into the Mercian Hockey League to provide challenging hockey and an exciting playoff and finals day. England Hockey has announced changes to the National Schools Competitions, the need for development teams at clubs has never been higher

The Coaches

Kiran Raichura (Performance Team Coach)

Kiran is a Level 2 qualified hockey coach and currently half-way through the two-year Great Britain Advanced Coach Programme. He’s also furthered his development through England Hockey’s Coaching for Talent course. Kiran has also engaged in softer development opportunities, observing England U16s and U18s camps and took part in a coach education session with Adam Commens, ex-Hockeyroos coach and current Performance Director at Belgium Hockey.

Kiran coaches across a range of different groups. In the England Hockey Player Pathway, he is a boys coach at the Northwood Performance Centre and coached at the Futures Cup in 2016-18. He is also player-coach at West Herts Mens 2nd XI, where, this summer, he has stepped down as Director of Junior Hockey, after overseeing the growth of the junior section from around 90 members six years ago to over 220 last season. Kiran has recently founded Beacon Hockey, which runs school holidays hockey camps. He also coached in Summer 2019 at Sport101’s Academy in St Albans.

Kiran is highly passionate about seeing his players enjoy the sport as much as he does and aims to give all players the support and guidance needed to reach their potential. His coaching style is a modern, game-based style, seeking to develop creative players, able to execute skills under pressure.

Mex Horne (Development Team Coach)

Having played hockey in the RAF, Mex now coaches the hockey teams at Merchant Taylors’ Prep School. He has played for OMT for a number of years, playing in all teams and is well experienced in coaching and developing junior hockey players.

Training Schedule

Training for the U14 section is as follows for the 2019/20 season:

  • Tuesday evenings:

    • 17:30: Clubhouse open for homework

    • 17:45: Warm-Up

    • 18:00 – 19:30/45: Pitch session

  • It is likely that in Term 2 the U14 and U16 training will be combined, the same as with the 2018/19 season, this will lead to dramatic improvements for the U14s as they get experience playing with the bigger boys.

Unless adverse weather conditions make it dangerous to travel, training sessions will always take place. If the pitches are frozen there will be an off-pitch session which will be active and/or technical, featuring yoga, video analysis or another form of performance gain for both Performance and Development teams.

Commitment to training must be shown, through attitude and attendance to ensure that there is real team unity. Coaches will expect their players to turn up with the appropriate hockey equipment and clothing. Coaches also expect pulse raisers and hockey specific warm-ups to be completed 15 minutes before the session begins.
