OMT U16s Boys’ Hockey

U16 Boys’ Hockey

U16 Boys’ Hockey Team

Welcome to all current and future OMT U16 players! Our coaching development plan moves from skill development to a combination of skill development, technical and tactical understanding and implementation.

Our coaching development plan has a focus on fun, technical skill development and tactical understanding. Our coaches, in this age group, begin to lay the foundations of understanding of the game.

Sport, in a supportive environment, helps children build confidence. It teaches children discipline, social skills and work ethic. Most of all, our members learn the value of their teammates.

Two teams, one ambition

Team selection is a fluid process; teams are selected on rates of development, commitment and technical, tactical and physical skills. Both teams train together and comradery is built throughout the section. Sportsmanship is a core club value and is required from the boys.

Fun and creativity coupled with intensity and competitiveness are the key principles for our Performance and Development sides.

Performance Team – The performance team will be entered into both the England Hockey Cup Competition and the Mercian League, where they will get to pit their wits against some of the best sides in the country.

Development Team – Entered into the Mercian Hockey League to provide challenging hockey and an exciting playoff and finals day. England Hockey has announced changes to the National Schools Competitions, the need for development teams at clubs has never been higher

The Coaches

Joe Gleeson (Performance Team Coach)

Joe brings over his knowledge from Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, Marlow HC and Sport101 working across a range of age groups. Joe is also the Manager of the Welsh National Age Group teams, so adds international experience to the programme.

Nick Koo (Development Team Coach)

Nick is an ex student at Merchant Taylors’ School and has extensive Junior coaching experience. He has proved himself invaluable to the club’s U16s. He works closely with Joe to deliver an exciting U16 program.

Training Schedule

Training for the U16 players takes place on Tuesday evenings from 17:30-19:00. Training will follow the hockey program outline and Joe Gleeson’s sessions that he has used to help players transition from the 7 to 11-a-side format.

Unless adverse weather conditions make it dangerous to travel, training sessions will always take place. If the pitches are frozen there will be an off-pitch session which will be active and/or technical, featuring yoga, video analysis or another form of performance gain for both Performance and Development teams.

Commitment to training must be shown, through attitude and attendance to ensure that there is real team unity. Coaches will expect their players to turn up with the appropriate hockey equipment and clothing. Coaches also expect pulse raisers and hockey specific warm-ups to be completed 15 minutes before the session begins.

Our men’s teams have been playing 50 years. We now have a women’s section and as part of our 50th year anniversary have added a Junior’s section that will become a leading light in coaching youth as well as community hockey.
